The customer by the check out was waving a hand, their voice climbing half an octave into the whine Wren knew well from triage lines. They jabbed a finger toward the top shelf. The clerk turned, craning his neck to look.
Her pulse knocked a frantic rhythm against her ribs, but she forced her posture to remain loose. She’d done this before: the supply tent on Gannis IV, mud caking her boots. Sweeping extra ration packs into her kit for the refugees while the logistics officer was busy flirting with the medtech.
Not theft. Resource reallocation based on critical need.
Same skills. Different mud.
The customer stepped forward, blocking the clerk’s line of sight completely.
